Education in the United States is provided in public 87%, private 10%, and home schools 3%. State governments set overall educational standards, often mandate standardized tests for K–12 in public school systems, and supervise, usually through a board of regents, state colleges, and universities.
Private schools are generally free to determine their own curriculum and policies, with voluntary accreditation available through independent regional accreditation authorities, although some state regulations can apply.
In 2018, the USA ranked #13 in PISA worldwide tests, measuring 15-year-old school students’ scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading.
